How to invest in a strategic portfolio at other brokerage firms

1. Choose the strategic portfolio that you want to invest in at go.vizmetricsonline.com. The strategic do-it-yourself portfolios all have portfolio IDs beginning with "s." such as s.brow (Harry Browne Portfolio) and s.aggr (Aggressive Allocation ETF Portfolio).

2. Click on the name of the Portfolio Recipe to open the detail page for the portfolio recipe that you wish to use.

3. Scroll down to the "How to Invest" section and find "Recipe ingredients"
This will show the tickers for the ETF ingredients used in this portfolio recipe. You will also see the percentage allocation for each ETF. This is also referred to as the "target allocation."
Example format (based on s.aggr, Aggressive Allocation ETF Portfolio):
                    SPY=15%, IJH=15%, ADRD=15%, VWO=20%, VB=10%, EMB=10%, ELD=10%, FRN=5%

4. Determine the total amount you want to invest using this portfolio recipe
For this example, let's say that you will invest $10,000

5. Calculate how much to invest in each portfolio ingredient
Multiply the percentage allocation for each ingredient by your total investment amount. This example portfolio has seven ingredients. For example:
  • For SPY, the amount to invest is 15% of $10,000, which is $1,500
  • For IJH, the amount to invest is 15% of $10,000, which is $1,500
  • For ADRD, the amount to invest is 15% of $10,000, which is $1,500
  • For VWO, the amount to invest is 20% of $10,000, which is $2,000
  • For VB, the amount to invest is 10% of $10,000, which is $1,000
  • For EMB, the amount to invest is 10% of $10,000, which is $1,000
  • For ELD, the amount to invest is 10% of $10,000, which is $1,000
  • For FRN, the amount to invest is 5% of $10,000, which is $500
5. Get share price for each ingredient
Find the recent price for each ingredient.
For example, let's say the recent prices per share are as follows:
  • SPY, $190 per share
  • IJH, $140 per share
  • ADRD, $22 per share
  • VWO, $33 per share
  • VB, $113 per share
  • EMB, $108 per share
  • ELD, $35 per share
  • FRN, $11 per share
6. Calculate the number of shares to buy of each ingredient
Divide each dollar amount to invest in each ingredient by the share price of each ingredient
For example:
  • For SPY, take $1,500 (which is the amount to invest in SPY) and divide that by $190 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 7.89 shares of SPY.
  • For IJH, take $1,500 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $140 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 10.71 shares to buy.
  • For ADRD, take $1,500 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $22 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 68.18 shares to buy.
  • For VWO, take $2,000 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $33 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy  60.61 shares to buy.
  • For VB, take $1,000 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $113 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy  8.85 shares to buy.
  • For EMB, take $1,000 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $108 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 9.26 shares to buy.
  • For ELD, take $1,000 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $35 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 28.57 shares to buy.
  • For FRN, take $500 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $11 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 45.45 shares to buy.

7. Make a list of trades
For example:
  • Buy 7.89 shares of SPY
  • Buy 10.71 shares of IJH
  • Buy 68.18 shares of ADRD
  • Buy 60.61 shares of VWO
  • Buy 8.85 shares of VB
  • Buy 9.26 shares of EMB
  • Buy 28.57 shares of ELD
  • Buy 45.45 shares of FRN
