How to invest in a tactical portfolio at other brokerage firms

2. After you have logged into go.vizmetricsonline.com, click on the name of the Portfolio Recipe to open the detail page for the portfolio recipe that you wish to use.

3. Scroll down to the "How to Invest" section and find "Recipe ingredients (for FolioInvesting.com)"
This will show a list of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) which form the ingredients for this Portfolio Recipe. You will also see the percentage allocation for each ETF. Note that these tickers and numbers are formatted for input into the FolioInvesting.com order page.
Example format (based on t.mva3, Minimum Variance Portfolio C):
        EEM,2.08,EFA,5.89,GLD,40.59,IWM,8.64,IYR,10.16,QQQ,2.79,SPY,5.61,TLT,24.24

4. Determine the total amount you want to invest using this Portfolio Recipe
For this example, let's say that you will invest $10,000

5. Calculate how much to invest in each portfolio ingredient
Multiply the percentage allocation for each ingredient by your total investment amount. This example portfolio has seven ingredients. For example:
  • For EEM, the amount to invest is 2.08% of $10,000, which is $208
  • For EFA, the amount to invest is 5.89% of $10,000, which is $589
  • For GLD, the amount to invest is 40.59% of $10,000, which is $4,059
  • For IWM, the amount to invest is 8.64% of $10,000, which is $864
  • For IYR, the amount to invest is 10.16% of $10,000, which is $1,016
  • For QQQ, the amount to invest is 2.79% of $10,000, which is $279
  • For SPY, the amount to invest is 5.61% of $10,000, which is $561
  • For TLT, the amount to invest is 24.24% of $10,000, which is $2,424
5. Get share price for each ingredient
Find the recent price for each ingredient.
For example, let's say the recent prices per share are as follows:
  • EEM, $32.99 per share
  • EFA, $59.06 per share
  • GLD, $106.13 per share
  • IWM, $114.12 per share
  • IYR, $68.88 per share
  • QQQ, $103.86 per share
  • SPY, $194.79 per share
  • TLT, $121.45 per share
6. Calculate the number of shares of each ingredient to buy
Divide each dollar amount to invest in each ingredient by the share price of each ingredient
For example:
  • For EEM, take $208 (which is the amount to invest in EEM) and divide that by $32.99 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 6.3 shares of EEM.
  • For EFA, take $589 (which is the amount to invest in EFA) and divide that by $59.06 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 9.97 shares of EFA.
  • For GLD, take $4,059 (which is the amount to invest in GLD) and divide that by $106.13 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 38.25 shares of GLD.
  • For IWM, take $864 (which is the amount to invest in IWM) and divide that by $114.12 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 7.57 shares of IWM.
  • For IYR, take $1,016 (which is the amount to invest in IYR) and divide that by $68.88 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 14.75 shares of IYR.
  • For QQQ, take $279 (which is the amount to invest in QQQ) and divide that by $103.86 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 2.69 shares of QQQ.
  • For SPY, take $561 (which is the amount to invest in SPY) and divide that by $194.79 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 2.88 shares of SPY.
  • For TLT, take $2,424 (which is the amount to invest in TLT) and divide that by $121.45 per share.
    • This results in needing to buy 19.96 shares of TLT.

7. Make a list of trades
For example:
  • Buy 6.3 shares of EEM
  • Buy 9.97 shares of EFA
